The Rules
1 - All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. Once Final inspection is made, the car will be sequestered.  The inspection points are as follows:

  1. The car must have been made during the current year (year in which the derby is held).
  2. The width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾” (including wheels).
  3. The length of the car shall not exceed 7”.
  4. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5.ooo ounces.
  5. The height of the car shall not exceed 5” (This is to accommodate the finish line gate).
  6. The bottom clearance between the car and flat surface must be at least 3/8”.
  7. The existing axel slots must be used.  Distance between axels must not be changed.
  8. Axles, wheels and body wood shall be as provided in the “Official Grand Prix Pinewood. Derby Kit”.
  9. Wheel bearings, washers and bushings are prohibited.
  10. The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.
  11. All 4 wheels of the car must touch a flat surface.
  12. Any details added to the car must be within the length, height, width and weight limits.
  13. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
  14. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
  15. The racing committee will provide an official number to each car.
  16. Only dry lubricant is permitted (like graphite).  This may be applied prior to race day, but will be available in “pit area.”
  17. Wheels cannot be modified.
  18. Wheels can be sanded to remove surface imperfections, but the treads must be left flat.
  19. Wheel edges cannot be rounded or angled.

2. Weights can be added to the cars as long as the above specifications are not exceeded.
3. Boys will be able to weigh-in and have their cars inspected prior to the official race inspection. Modifications can be made to the vehicle up to the official race inspection and weigh-in. At this point, the cars will be quarantined until after the race (see schedule for times to follow).
4. Wheels can be lubricated prior to the car being quarantined (dry only). Once the car has been officially quarantined, no other handling will be permitted.
5. The front of the car should not be too pointed or narrow. The car will need to be able to sit securely on the starting dowel.

NOTE:  Each Scout is responsible for understanding and following all rules.  Nothing would be more heartbreaking than to work hard on a car and then have it disqualified for a rule violation.

* The Race

Using Grand Prix Package with K3 Timer

1.       Each den will have an established race time. Den 5 will race with Den 1 (Webelos).  Boys in the den will be racing together in heats.

2.       Each car will race in each lane, not necessarily racing against each car.  Times will be calculated for each car in each heat and averaged.  These times will be used to decide 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Places for that Den.

3.       The 12 fastest cars will advance to the final round regardless of standing in a particular den.  A car which did not finish in the top 3 slots of his den may still advance to the finals if times are within the top 12 range.

4.       Times and standings will be intermittently projected on the wall (or screen if available).

5.      If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc, the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble 2 times in the same heat, the contestant will be disqualified from the heat.   A time of 9.999 seconds will be received for that heat.

6.      If a car has mechanical problems, the contestant will have a couple of minutes to fix the problem. The car will need to be re-inspected prior to returning to the race. If the mechanical problem cannot be corrected, the car will be disqualified from the race.

7.      If boys cannot make the race event but made a car or if their cars make the championship round but the boy cannot stay, his car can be ran for him by the Pack race officials.

General
The pack will provide graphite and various weights during prequalification and race day.

Siblings interested in making a car can bring it on Friday or Saturday and race it as time permits. Siblings must purchase their own cars.
